Choosing a proper diet is an important part for control of Diabetes mellitus. A low carbohydrate diet is the most suitable one for diabetic patients. Always remember to avoid keto diet in persons with Diabetes because high intake of fat causes blockage of blood vessels and increase fat deposition in the liver causing fatty liver and fat break down causes ketosis. Also very low carbohydrate diet causes hypoglycemia in persons with high blood sugar so avoid VLCD diet (Less than 800 calories per day).

For better sugar control always focus on diet along with drugs and exercise. Without proper diet it is difficult to control blood sugar and lead to complications like urinary infection, fungal infections, vomiting, weight loss and even ketosis and skin infections.

A diet rich in fibres , low carbohydrate, high protein and low fat is ideal for diabetic patients. Always drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily to prevent urinary infection. Small frequent meals are preferred than 3 big or main meals. Can have non sugar snacks in between. Fruits like papaya, apple, guava, banana, are preferred. Millets , oats, and ragi can be used instead of rice.

Regular checking of blood sugar with glucometer atleast FBS is important. Monitor HbA1c and FLP and creatinine every third month. Have a regular check up every monthly at your diabetologist💜and adjust the medicines accordingly. Always have a cardiology and eye check up yearly to avoid morbidity and mortality.

Also avoid intermittent fasting in diabetic patients, since 16 hours of fasting can cause hypoglycemia. In religious fasting, take drugs along with major meals, and avoid drugs during fasting hours to prevent hypoglycemia. In case of feasting, kindly check blood sugar before going for feast, and take adequate insulin or drugs according to blood sugar. Always avoid feasting if blood sugar is high or uncontrolled, to avoid complications. Have a good exercise before and after feasting. If on insulin add 2 to 4 Units extra for good control of blood sugar. 💊
